Delaware State Police Report Cody Hopkins Dead; Speed and Alcohol Factors in Crash

Milford- The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that has claimed the life of a Milford man which occurred early this week.

The investigation thus far has determined that the crash occurred on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at 11:24 p.m., as Cody S. Hopkins, 24, was operating a 2006 Dodge Ram and was traveling in a northbound direction on Canterbury Road just south of Blue Jay Lane. As Hopkins attempted to negotiate a curve in the roadway, his vehicle’s right side tires traveled off of the east edge of the roadway. The Ram then re-entered the roadway and began to rotate in a clockwise direction before skidding off of the roadway. It then traveled in a northeasterly direction before striking a group of trees and overturning, ejecting Hopkins onto Blue Jay Lane. The Dodge continued traveling in a northeasterly direction until it came to rest on its right-hand side on Blue Jay Lane.

Speed and alcohol use appear to be factors in this crash which remains under investigation at this time.

Cody Hopkins, who was not properly restrained at the time of the crash, was removed from the scene and transported to the Milford Memorial Hospital. He was later transported to the Christiana Hospital where he was admitted in critical condition before being declared dead on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. EKIN – Bond was set Wednesday at $500,000 for a Morton man when he was charged with killing a motorcyclist while allegedly driving drunk late Tuesday.

Colton Vinovich, 25, told his father at the crash site, “I guess I smoked the stop sign” at Tennessee Avenue and Queenwood Road southeast of Morton, according to a prosecutor’s court affidavit.

Vinovich also told police at the scene that he had stopped at the intersection but didn’t see Burger’s motorcycle approaching on his right as he pulled into the crossing that’s located within unobstructed farm fields.

He said he was heading home as he drove north on Tennessee at about 11 p.m. when the motorcycle, westbound on Queenwood, slammed into the passenger side of his Jeep SUV. Parts of the motorcycle were found embedded in the Jeep. Queenwood is not controlled by a stop sign at the intersection, Morton police said.   MORE

Daniel Scott Bradford sentenced to 18 years in prison for repeat DWI convictions

From Stephenville Empire=Tribune

06/24/2017   –   Today, after deliberating for under an hour, a jury of six women and six men sentenced a man to 18 years in the penitentiary for Driving While Intoxicated.

Daniel Scott Bradford pleaded not guilty to felony D.W.I., and a two-part trial was held in the 266th District Court to determine his guilt and punishment. After the verdict was rendered, Judge Jason Cashon immediately imposed the sentence.

Bradford, 37, had been previously convicted twice for D.W.I. in 2005 and 2008. He also had been convicted of Felony D.W.I. – 3rd or more in 2008. Because of his previous convictions, Bradford was facing two to twenty years in prison for the felony D.W.I. Testimony in the trial from Trooper Terry Jones revealed that shortly before midnight on May 5, 2016, Bradford was pulled over for speeding on North Highway 377. After failing to stop for approximately four miles, Bradford stopped his Chevrolet pickup but refused for several minutes to exit the vehicle. After finally exiting his vehicle, Bradford showed signs of intoxication.

Bradford announced to the officers that “this is the reason you guys are getting your heads blown off,” and that he wished he had a gun in the truck so he could have shot officers in the head.

Dash camera video played in the courtroom showed Bradford being belligerent with Trooper Jones and Sheriff’s deputies at the scene and at the hospital where his blood was drawn for analysis. Bradford announced to the officers that “this is the reason you guys are getting your heads blown off,” and that he wished he had a gun in the truck so he could have shot officers in the head.

A blood sample was taken from Bradford. The DPS Crime Laboratory in Abilene found the sample contained a blood alcohol concentration of 0.22, just under three times the 0.08 level which defines intoxication.   MORE

Oscar’s family ask for help with funeral

From Gofundme.com

Oscar was only 14 years old when his life was taken away from him when a drunk driver hit his mother’s car. He was the only boy in the family and was his sisters and mother’s keeper. He leaves behind 3 sisters and his mother, who always did everything in her power to give them a better life as a single mother. He was loved by all his family and was always the light of the party. His family is devasted with the loss of his life and need help to cover funeral and medical expenses for his mother as she was also very badly injured. The Covarrubias family would greatly appreciate any help and prayers as we endure these difficult moments. Thank you.

Brandon Woodward, 19, charged with DUI and faces homicide rap for killing Lily Afton Brennan and Lesli Michael Sandoval Nunez, injured Dalton Murrieta

CHP West Valley Officers store a vehicle.

SANTA BARBARA, CALIF. — According to the California Highway Patrol, a fatal traffic collision occurred at approximately 9:23 p.m. June 26, 2017.  A male driver with four passengers was traveling on Gibraltar Road southbound, south of East Camino Cielo in a 2005 Volkswagen Passat.  The driver lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle went down a steep embankment overturning numerous times.  The Volkswagen came to rest approximately 300 feet below the point at which it left the roadway.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office released the names of two young females who were fatally injured in a vehicle collision that occurred at approximately 9:23 p.m., June 26, 2017, off Gibraltar Road.

The Sheriff identified the two dead teens as 17-year-old Lily Afton Brennan of Ventura and 19-year-old Lesli Michael Sandoval Nunez of Ventura.

The women were among five occupants in a 2005 Volkswagen Passat that was driving southbound, south of East Camino Cielo when the driver, 19-year-old Brandon Woodward of Ventura, lost control of the vehicle causing it to descend 300 feet down a steep embankment, overturning numerous times. Personnel from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, Montecito Fire Protection District, Santa Barbara City Fire Department, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, American Medical Response, California Shock Trauma Air Rescue (Calstar), and California Highway Patrol responded to the scene. The responding agencies were coordinated by the Santa Barbara County Public Safety Dispatch Center.

Due to the nature of the critical life-threatening injuries and the remote, rugged terrain, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff/Fire Air Support Unit and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SBCSAR) team were called in to assist in reaching the victims. In order for Copter 3 to land and begin the extrication process, CHP shut down Gibraltar Road, which stayed closed for several hours while emergency personnel assisted the involved parties.

Medics, Fire, and Santa Barbara County Search and Rescue personnel repelled down to the vehicle and started treating the occupants who were trapped inside. They determined that two of the occupants (Brandon Woodward, the driver, and a 16-year-old female juvenile from Ventura) suffered major injuries. One male occupant (19-year-old Dalton Murrieta of Ventura) had minor injuries and two female occupants had fatal injuries.

To ensure the survivors received the help they needed as quickly as possible, “Calstar 7” an EMS helicopter was also dispatched to the scene.

Copter 3 hoisted a Santa Barbara County Fire Paramedic to the vehicle to help package the two critical patients for hoist rescue. Copter 3 then hoisted the first patient, Woodward, from the vehicle and transported him to a nearby landing site along Gibraltar Road. Woodward was ultimately transferred to Calstar 7. Copter 3 then returned to the scene and hoisted the second critical patient, the 16-year-old female juvenile, and a paramedic into the helicopter. The second patient was then transported directly to the Cottage Hospital helipad.

The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team along with fire personnel then spent the next several hours helping to extricate the third patient with minor injuries from his vehicle and raise him back up 300 feet to Gibraltar Road where he was transported by AMR to the hospital.

Search and Rescue and Fire personnel continued to work together throughout the night to remove the deceased females from the vehicle and raise them back up to Gibraltar Road where they were released to the Coroner’s Office.

A total of five technical rope-raising evolutions, which combined is more than 1,500 feet, were required in order to get all of the emergency personnel, equipment, the third injured victim and the two deceased females back up to Gibraltar Road.

CHP is conducting an investigation into the fatal collision and has arrested the driver, Brandon Woodward, on suspicion of driving while under the influence.
